Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with The Philadelphia Orchestra
This March, Joyce DiDonato joins Yannick Nézet-Séguin and The Philadelphia Orchestra for Mahler’s sweeping “Resurrection” Symphony, with performances in Philadelphia and New York City. Joyce has collaborated with Nézet-Séguin and the orchestra several times, recently singing the alto solo in Mahler’s Third Symphony.
The performances were widely lauded, with Jay Nordlinger of The New Criterion calling it “the best thing I’ve ever heard,” and continuing, “She was superb… Her sound—utterly unforced—penetrated. She was sincere and ineffable (and in tune, no small thing). The way she closed the “sch” in “Mensch” was startling and enveloping.” Parterre’s Cameron Kelsall said, “DiDonato expressed the anguish of humankind’s folly in an interpretation that only gained in complexity with each performance. She made every word count, and each repeat of Tief (“deep”) took on greater meaning.”
Joyce and the orchestra will be joined onstage by soprano Ying Fang and the Philadelphia Symphonic Choir. Performances take place in Philadelphia on March 6 and 8 at Marian Anderson Hall and at New York’s Carnegie Hall on March 10.
