This month, Joyce embarks on a tour of Handel’s second to last oratorio, Theodora, singing Irene, the confidante of the titular Christian martyr. Featuring a star-studded cast and Il Pomo d’Oro, led by Maxim Emelyanychev, the five-country tour will begin in Vienna, then continue to Milan at Teatro alla Scala, and on to Paris and Luxembourg, with the last performance in Essen, Germany.

Handel’s intimate masterpiece summons many colors and musical nuances to exalt virtue and faith, and it is his only oratorio other than Messiah to be based on a Christian subject. Ms. DiDonato will be joined by a roster of fantastic colleagues, including Lisette Oropesa in the title role, Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian as Didymus, Michael Spyres as Septimius, and John Chest as Valens.

In 2022, Joyce will make her greatly anticipated staged role debut as Irene in Katie Mitchell’s new production of Theodora at the Royal Opera House. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit the Royal Opera House.
