“In War & Peace” European Tour
Joyce DiDonato reunites with her long-time collaborators, conductor Maxim Emelyanychev and his Italian Baroque ensemble, Il Pomo d’Oro, for the “In War & Peace – Harmony Through Music” album tour throughout Europe (program now available for purchase on CD/DVD). The conductor and ensemble were vital to the recording of DiDonato’s award-winning album, which was released in 2016. The program will feature arias and instrumental works by Handel, Purcell, Emilio de’Cavalieri, Gesualdo, and Arvo Pärt.
This spirited group will begin the tour on May 22, with a sold-out performance at the Gulbenkian Música in Lisbon. Shortly after, they will travel to Germany for a series of concerts:
May 24 – Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden
May 26 – Georg-Friedrich-Händel-Halle
May 27 – “In War & Peace” discussion at the Frauenkirche Dresden
May 28 – Kulturpalast Dresden
May 30 – Elbphilharmonie Hamburg (sold-out)
They will continue on June 1 at the Hagia Irene for the Istanbul Music Festival. They return to Germany on June 17 to the Philharmonie im Gasteig in Munich. The last two performances will take place June 19 at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in Budapest, and then on June 22 at the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center in Athens, which marks her official concert debut in Greece.
“Il Pomo d’Oro under Maxim Emelyanychev were sensitive accompanists, but matched DiDonato for intensity of performance; vibrant and flashy in moments of activity, earthy and solemn in moments of reflection. DiDonato’s project is a worthy one … if we, pausing briefly to enjoy good music, can be encouraged to reflect and take a breath, it’s no bad thing… especially if it’s music-making of DiDonato’s quality.” (Bachtrack)
