“There was one wonderful moment in Les Troyens at the Staatsoper (November 1), but we had to wait quite some time for it. It occurred after Enée had left Didon for Italy, and the Carthaginian queen yearned, then fumed and finally gave in to despair — all in front of a dark curtain, with one spotlight on the singing actress. It didn’t need more, because Joyce DiDonato supplied everything else — an enormous and truly ravishing spectrum of feelings, expressed by phenomenal vocal means. It was one of those breathtaking theatrical moments for which one waits years.”
